Just to show my appreciation for Tom Goes to the Mayor, I decided to make myself an official citizen of Jefferton. I was thinking about doing some voice recorcding and doing a little animated flash peice, but I’d have to sit down and think up a little script that would be funny and weird enough to compliment the wonderful writing of Tim & Eric & their crew.
Anyway, here’s a little “how-to” when it comes to Tom Goes to the Mayor tributes:
1. Take a picture of yourself. It needs to be a very unflattering picture of yourself no matter what sort of facial expression you’re trying to convey. Here’s a tip: pull your head back so that you have plenty of neck/chin rings that show up. Those are always unflattering.
2. Open the picture with Adobe Photoshop and crop yourself out of the background in your picture. Feel free to place yourself into another background created by yourself, photographed by yourself, or stolen off the internet (I opted for option #3).
3. Set your forground color to a nice blue color (i used hex code #1B2E97) and your background color to white.
3. Apply the “Photocopy” filter (it’s under the “Sketch” filters) to your picture layer. Set the detail to 5 and darkness to 20 for maximum “TGTTM” effect.
4. Save your creation and post it to the web, or export your graphics into Flash for animation fun.
5. ENJOY!

awesome. but i can’t get the image to crop cleanly. photoshop is not my friend.
Comment by LV July 1, 2006 @ 4:29 pmYeah, how do you get it to crop so cleanly? I just use the lasso tool, and it sucks.
Comment by Grady July 15, 2006 @ 9:06 amWhenever I’m cropping I usually start with the magnetic lasso tool for a quick rough outline, and then either switch to the lasso and/or polygonial lasso tool if I’m doing something with a sharp edge (usually shapes) or I go into quick mask edit mode and use different sized paintbrushes to make my selection when there are rougher or blurry edges (people). It helps to zoom in quite a bit and use the “add to” and “subtract from” options when using the lasso tool instead of trying to crop it all in one go.
Also, to make life easier, take the picture of yourself with a solid background behind you. It’s like greenscreening and will make the cropping much easier to do.

The pen tool is your friend! Makes cropping easy as pie.
